India from the eyes of its activists. This is what is proposed in the documentary Behind India-A look from its social movements<\/em>, directed by Fernando Vera and produced by the Gipuzkoan NGO Calcutta Ondoan, which has been working in that country for two decades. The film, which will be screened this afternoon at the Film and Human Rights Festival, was presented yesterday by its director, the representative of the non-governmental organization, I\u00f1igo Eguren, and Nandini and Sangeetha, two members of the Hindu NGO Vimochana, which fights against the violence suffered by women in India.<\/p>\n

The audiovisual, which, at first, in Vera’s own words, could seem “incomprehensible” as it tries to capture the reality of the different social movements working in that country, takes as its axis the life of Santoshi Tundu, who in recent years has gone from farmer to activist, with the help of the organizations Calcutta Ondoan and Udayani. This woman, who married at the age of thirteen, offers her vision of human rights violations based on her own experience, a core story that is complemented, for example, by the testimonies of the philosopher Vandana Shiva, the activist Asha Kowtal or the coordinator of the World Women’s Tribunals, Corinne Kumar. It was announced that she would participate in the festival but, finally, due to the impossibility of her attendance, she has been replaced by Nandini and Sangeetha, who yesterday gave a good account of the objectives of their organization, of how they work to transform the Hindu society. “In Europe we have forgotten to protest against what is unjust,” the director commented to highlight the activism of organizations such as Vimochana.<\/p>\n

For their part, their representatives affirmed that “women are not objects, they are human beings,” in reference to their association’s objective of building societies and communities free of violence. “Violence done to a woman, a person, is an attack on human rights,” Sangeetha summarized.<\/p>\n

Her organisation, which works closely with groups oppressed by class or caste, operates on three levels: with women; with states and governments to promote the adoption of laws and regulations against violence; and with society as a whole to \u201cchange the way it views women\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
